Connecting to CERN AFS in Windows 7

  • AFS client authentication to CERN requires the following software to be installed on your desktop/ laptop:
    • OpenAFS
    • Heimdal (Implementation of Kerberos v5)
      • The kerberos configuration file is applied via group policies, which means the folder has to be deleted before Heimdal can be installed (C:\ProgramData\kerberos), otherwise the installer will fail.
      • After installing Heimdal, open a command prompt (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt) and enter "gpupdate /force", you may have to do this a couple of times.
      • The configuration file contains all the settings including the default cell (CERN.CH), used for obtaining tokens via the Windows AFS client.
      • The configuration file is available below.
  • To obtain a new AFS token open the AFS Client and right-click Obtain New Tokens, you can then enter your AFS Username and Password in the popup box.
  • To map the network drive, right-click on Computer in the Start menu and select "Map Network drive...". Select a drive letter for the folder and enter \\AFS\cern.ch\user\<surname initial>\<surname>
  • Click "Finish", you can now browse your directory
