  • Mozilla Firefox

No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox is the gold standard of alternatives to the still-dominant Internet Explorer. Firefox 3.6 is full-featured, lightning fast, and secure. Its killer selection of add-ons remains strong, with built-in support for the next generation of themes, called Personas, plus the latest update makes version 3.6 about 20 percent faster than version 3.5. However, competition is strong and it can no longer be said that Firefox is the fastest browser available.

Several notable improvements in the latest revamp keep Firefox abreast of current browsing tech. In addition to the aforementioned improvements made to the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine so that it renders Web applications faster, there have also been other significant under-the-hood changes. These include: blocking third-party software from encroaching on Firefox's file system turf to increase stability; support for the Web Open Font Format, which means many non-English browser users should have a faster time loading Web pages with downloadable fonts; and support for the File interface, which can help with tasks such as uploading multiple photos and is part of the draft HTML5-standard effort. HTML5 support debuted in Firefox 3.5. Another deeper change to the browser is that it is now running scripts asynchronously, which can help to load a Web page faster by putting off some work until the high-priority chores are complete. Firefox 3.6 also isolates out-of-date plug-ins so they do not become a security risk.

Unlike Firefox 3.5, which was more about keeping the browser current rather than blazing new trails, Firefox 3.6 is once again on the warpath. Upgrading is highly recommended.

Sophos Anti-Virus enables centralised installation, configuration, updating and reporting.
General Utilities:

  • 7-zip

It's easy for Windows users to forget that WinZip isn't the only file-compression utility in the world. Like its better-known competitors, the free 7-Zip unpacks a host of archive formats, including ZIP, TAR, GZ, and its own 7z format. Unlike WinZip, though, it can create TAR and GZ archives, which are commonly used on Unix and Linux systems.

The program's ability to shrink files was stunning. In our tests, 7z archives were up to 40 percent smaller then their ZIP equivalents, although compression did take longer, and the highest compression settings can hog system resources. Advanced options include the ability to create solid and self-extracting archives, and to adjust the compression level and password protection. The program also has a command line module. Though the main interface is overly simple and looks like it was designed for Windows 95, it's not hard to use and fairly self-explanatory. The context menu options, which include "testing" an archive, indicate that 7-Zip should be taken seriously.

7-Zip is fine for casual users with a bit of computer savvy, but it's especially well-suited for developers and anyone else who moves between the Windows and Linux/Unix worlds.
  • CERN HPGL Viewer

The CERN HP-GL viewer is designed to display legal HP-GL and HP-GL/2 files on screen and to allow printing them and converting them to other formats. The primary design criteria have been correctness, speed, and portability to various platforms. Versions of the viewer run on Microsoft Windows versions 95 and newer, Apple MacOS 8 and newer, and on various Unix variants including IBM AIX, Compaq/Digital OSF/1, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Linux, Sun Solaris, and Apple MaxOS X / Darwin. The current version of the viewer understands most of the old HP-GL and the current HP-GL/2 standards and extensions with a few exceptions:

- No support for the Dual-Context Extension, i.e., using raster commands belonging to HP RTL (Raster Transfer Language) or HP PCL (Printer Control Language) command sets, or using the Scalable or Bitmap Fonts command sets. Such commands are syntactically parsed and skipped without interpreting them.

- HP PJL (Printer Job Language) headers are parsed and skipped. The only feature interpreted is the language mode (HPGL / HPGL2), which may, however, be overridden if the file is later found to contain commands belonging solely to the other mode.

- Minimal support for built-in fonts. The HP-GL/2 symbol sets supported are: US ASCII, Roman Extensions, Roman8, Latin1, Latin2, Latin5, and HP-GL Drafting. The only available typeface is the simple vector stick font. No other font characteristics are supported.

- No support for device output and control commands in the Technical Graphics Extension.

- No support for the commands in the Digitizing Extension.

- No support for configurable line attributes, i.e., different line ends and joins.

- Minimal support for advanced merge control and pixel placement commands in the Advanced Drawing Extension. The merge commands are propagated when saving the file in HP-GL/2 from the viewer but are not interpreted for screen display or for printing on non-HP-GL/2 printers.

Practice has shown that few plot files heavily utilize features outside of the set currently supported by the viewer. However, in the future most of the above items are expected to be supported with the exception of device control and digitizing commands, which make no sense in the viewer context.

ImgBurn is a lightweight CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-ray burning application that has several modes, each for performing a different task: Read - read a disc to an image file; Build - creates an image file from files on your computer or network (you also can write the files directly to a disc); Write - write an image file to a disc; Verify - ensure that a disc is 100% readable (you can also have ImgBurn compare it against a given image file to ensure the actual data is correct); and Discovery - used in combination with DVDInfoPro, you can check the quality of the burns your drive is producing.
  • Notepad++

Notepad Plus Plus is a Notepad replacement with an eye toward programmers, although it should also appeal to the casual user who wants a cross between Notepad and WordPad. Notepad Plus Plus has some noticeable differences from WordPad. Support for tabs is key, letting users manage different documents simultaneously. Line-numbering is important, too, a feature that nobody mucking about in C should be without.

The interface is much simpler compared with some of its competitors. A familiar row of icons with their mouse-over labels sits at the top, and one row of tabs is just below that. The rest of the screen is made of nothing but pure white space. All the coding tools live in the menu bar, with some represented on the toolbar. Users can compile and run macros, convert text to Hex, submit directly to W3C for validation, launch in Firefox and IE, and more. There's also a built-in spell-checker.

Choosing between Notepad Plus Plus and NoteTab Light probably will depend as much on layout as anything else. Although, forgive the pun, notably Notepad Plus Plus can not autoreplace Notepad, it's still an excellent Notepad replacement.

  • VLC Video LAN

VLC Media Player is a long-time open-source favorite, and the latest version is also the first to be out of beta development. It's not the only option for free video playback, but it's one of the best, and the feature updates in version 1 make it well worth the upgrade.

Users can now get frame-by-frame advancement, granular speed controls allowing for on-the-fly slower or faster playback, and live recording of streaming video. The toolbars are fully customizable, so you can have only the buttons you need in the interface, there's AirTunes streaming, and there's better integration in Gtk environments. Along with the improvements, VLC continues to offer robust support for a wide range of video and audio formats, including OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac, and even support for playing back zipped files.

The default interface is still a stripped down player that belies VLC's functionality and features. Skinning can fix that quickly, but behavior can still be a bit unpredictable depending on the quality of the skin. VLC's open-source foundation and community ensures that it evolves quickly and often, with new features and fixes released frequently. Overall, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.

The programs' descriptions are taken from http://www.cnet.com/ or from the publisher's website.
