Open AFS

Connecting to RAL AFS in Windows 7

  • Install OpenAFS
  • To obtain a new AFS token you need to log in. Start a Windows command prompt session (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt) and enter "klog -prin <username> -cell rl.ac.uk". Enter your AFS password when prompted.
  • To map the network drive, right-click on Computer in the Start menu and select "Map Network drive...". Select a drive letter for the folder and enter \\AFS\rl.ac.uk\user\<surname initial>\<surname>
  • Click "Finish", you can now browse your directory

Connecting to CERN AFS in Windows 7

  • AFS client authentication to CERN requires the following software to be installed on your desktop/ laptop:
    • OpenAFS
    • Heimdal (Implementation of Kerberos v5)
      • The kerberos configuration file is applied via group policies, which means the folder has to be deleted before Heimdal can be installed (C:\ProgramData\kerberos), otherwise the installer will fail.
      • After installing Heimdal, open a command prompt (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt) and enter "gpupdate /force", you may have to do this a couple of times.
      • The configuration file contains all the settings including the default cell (CERN.CH), used for obtaining tokens via the Windows AFS client.
      • The configuration file is available below.
  • To obtain a new AFS token open the AFS Client and right-click Obtain New Tokens, you can then enter your AFS Username and Password in the popup box.
  • To map the network drive, right-click on Computer in the Start menu and select "Map Network drive...". Select a drive letter for the folder and enter \\AFS\cern.ch\user\<surname initial>\<surname>
  • Click "Finish", you can now browse your directory

Known issues:

This section was created because of some certain issues with Open AFS, mainly hanging on the Windows logon screen or problems with getting a token.

  • DO NOT INSTALL THE AFS LOOPBACK ADAPTER
  • Make sure the AFS Loopback adapter is disabled, otherwhise the PC wil hang on the Windows logon screen. You can find it in the network settings with the other network adapters.
  • To stop seeing error messages while loging to Windows download and run two registry files from this topic (see attachment)
