Print Queues

The departmental print server is HEPWIN2008P.PP.RL.AC.UK. On Windows all these printers can be found under \\hepwin2008p\<printer-name>

The print server runs a web interface allowing any user to view the current status of all printers, and how many jobs are in the queue.

The list of printers can be found here (authenticate with Federal ID and password if challenged):

http://hepwin2008p.pp.rl.ac.uk/Printers/ipp_0001.asp

or alternatively, individual printers at:

http://hepwin2008p.pp.rl.ac.uk/printers/<printer_name>/.printer

Setting up network printers

On Windows systems, the default network printers above should automatically be deployed to your computer. If for any reason the printer you want does not appear or you are using a different operating system, instructions for adding printers are below.

  • Windows 7/Vista

    1. Windows 7 - Open the Start Menu and go to Devices and Printers
Windows Vista - Open the Start Menu and go to Control Panel (Classic view) > Printers
    2. Click Add a printer on the toolbar at the top of the window
    3. Select Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer
    4. Click The printer that I want isn’t listed
    5. If you know the address of the printer (e.g. \\hepwin2008p\hepcps1), select the second option and type this in the box. Alternatively keep the first option selected and click Next
    6. If you opted to find a printer in the directory, click Find now, and select the printer you want from the list
    7. If you wish, tick the box to set this printer as the default. Click Next and then Finish

  • Windows XP

    1. Open the Start Menu and go to Printers and Faxes
    2. Under the Printer Tasks pane on the left-hand side, click Add a printer
    3. Click Next, and select A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer, and then Next again
    4. Follow steps 5-7 as above

  • Mac OS X
    • Launch "System Preferences..." (found under the Apple menu) and select the "Print & Scan" tab in the "Hardware" row
    • If need be, click the padlock and authenticate to make changes
    • Click the "+" sign at the bottom of the list of printers:
    • Choose "IP" as the class
    • "Protocol" should be "Line Printer Daemon - LPD"
    • Printer address is hepwin2008p.pp.rl.ac.uk
    • Set the queue name to whichever printer you require and set "Print Using" to "Select Printer Software..." and select the correct PPD for the printer
    • Click "Add" and specify the appropriate options for the printer (very good idea to set "Paper Matching" to "Nearest Size & Scale" for the HP printers...)

    • You need to first install the printer driver from Canon, minimum version version 4.0.0 - earlier versions assumed a direct connection to the printer, rather than via a print server.
    • Version 4.0.0 available from http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0044055_0011096.asp?model=
    • To enable double sided printing and the stapler, go to "Options and Supplies...", "Driver" tab and set "Output Options" to "Staple Finisher"
    • When printing, double-sided printing and stapling are selected on the "Finishing" tab rather than "Layout" as with every other printer...
  • Linux The queues should already be defined as above.

    • By default the Canon driver attempts to change the protocol to a proprietary protocol, rather than LPD.
    • When you create the printer you get a pop-up window titled "Communication Setting", with two buttons, "Unidirectional" and "Bidirectional" and no means of closing this window.
    • If you click either of these buttons you end up with a broken print queue.
    • Instead you now need to log out to remove this window and leave the queue defined as LPD.

  • NB: for the Canon C5045i

    1. you must first create the queue with "Print Using" set to "Generic PostScript Printer", then quit from System Preferences, so that the queue is created as an LPD queue rather than using the proprietary Canon protocol.
    2. then once it's created, relaunch "System Preferences...", select the "Print & Fax" tab again, select the printer
    3. click the "Options & Supplies..." button, select the Driver tab and only then set "Print Using" to the correct PPD
    • On the General tab the URL for the printer should read "lpd://hepwin2008p.pp.rl.ac.uk/hepcps1" - otherwise it assumes a direct connection to the printer and will not work.

  • Linux The queues should already be defined as above.
